CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN BIOINFORMATICS
*************************************************
BII, Bioinformatics Institute of India offers a high-value programme
in bioinformatics. This 2 DAY programme in bioinformatics will equip
professionals with both fundamentals and advance topics in
bioinformatics. This course will insights in this high opportunity
area of bioinformatics. Course material including CD will be provided to the program participants.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE
To prepare and groom potential bioinformatic pros to fill the gap
between employment opportunities and trained personnel in biotech/bioinformatics industry. This programme is a stepping stone
for professionals to switch their existing careers in IT/Pharma/Agriculture/Research/Medicine to the high growth area of
bioinformatics.
INTENTED AUDIENCE
Working Professionals from IT, Engineering, Pharmacy, Life Sciences,
Agriculture industry, Doctors, R&D Scientists etc are encouraged to
undergo the programme. Highly motivated students may also apply.
Prior background in information technology or life sciences is not
necessary. However, it is desired that the participants should have working knowledge in any one of the above areas.

bioinformatics in 2 days? This could be just a orientation program to know what bioinformatics is. Please do not think you can learn bioinformatics or
this certificate could be of any worth to get a job or something.
"To prepare and groom potential bioinformatic pros to fill the gap
between employment opportunities and trained personnel in biotech/bioinformatics industry."
--- really?

As I see it, most certificate programs from University Extension are useless. They are big money for the schools and for the teachers. But big waste
of money and time for students. I do not think it can prepare a person to be a bioIT professionals adequately. Taking a few evening
clbottomes is no equivalent to years of training. I think certificate programs are only useful to people who are already in the field and who
want to keep their skills updated.
Yesterday, I was talking to a bioinformatics professor from a major local research university. He is formally trained as a computer scientist.
During the conversation, I realize that he does not know that "nucleotide triphosphate hydrolase" and "ATPase/GTPase" are the same. He does not have
the chemistry knowledge well enough to know that in this case "hydrolase" and "phophatase" are the same protein. I do not think a "BioIT certified"
person without formal life science training would know this. In fact, I do not even think our average life science undergraduates or even some life
science PhD would figure this out immediately.
There are more oppotunities in SF Bay area than others. In my personal experiences and other's as well, I have more responses in SF Bay area than in
San Diego/La Jolla. There are many biotech companies as well as many government/national and university labs.
