Bioinformatician/Software (Web) Developer
  • Xenbase, at the University of Calgary, is looking for a Bioinformatician/​Software (Web) Developer.​

    Xenbase (<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.&#8203;xenbase.&">www.&#8203;xenbase.&</a><!-- w -->#8203;org) is a model organism database for Xenopus tropicalis and Xenopus laevis, two frog species that are among the principal vertebrate model organisms used in biological and medical research.&#8203; Xenbase is a multimedia, web-based scientific research tool integrating genomic sequences, literature, experimental images and other data generated in research using Xenopus.&#8203; Xenbase is used by scientists around the world for biological and medical research.&#8203;

    The successful candidate will develop and maintain web applications using Java, Struts, iBatis, Ajax, JavaScript, HTML, XML and CSS.&#8203; They may also work with GMOD tools such as GBrowse and Textpresso and work on bioinformatics data processing pipelines using Perl, Java and Web Services.&#8203; They will participate in design and systems administration tasks and will be independently responsible for the design and development of some software modules and administration of certain systems or software packages.&#8203;

    The successful candidate will also be responsible for mentoring and training more junior employees.&#8203;


    We are looking for a versatile developer.&#8203; Required skills are Java, JSP and Servlets, SQL, and object-oriented development.&#8203;

    Experience in any of the following areas would be highly valued&#8203;.

    * Frameworks, especially Struts and iBatis (MyBatis)
    * WebSphere Application Server and Rational Application Developer (or Eclipse)
    * Ajax.&#8203;
    * Perl
    * BioPerl and GMOD tools such as Chado, GBrowse and Textpresso.&#8203;

    Any of the following secondary skills would also be valued:

    * Linux administration, especially Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    * DB2
    * Ant
    * Agile programming and Test Driven Development
    * SOAP
    * XML and XSLT
    * Shell scripting
    * Mediawiki
    * CVS
    * Jira
    * NCBI E-utilities

    A B.&#8203;Sc.&#8203; or M.&#8203;Sc.&#8203; in Computer Science or equivalent work experience is required.&#8203; Some background in Biology or Bioinformatics would also be valued.&#8203; Strong written/&#8203;verbal communications skills are a must.&#8203;

    The successful candidate will work as part of a group of software developers and scientific curators working in a relaxed academic environment with opportunities to explore new technologies and participate in novel Computer Science research.&#8203;
